Bag Filter vs Cartridge Filter: How to Choose the Right Filtration for Your Water System

“Should we install a bag filter or a cartridge filter?” It’s one of the first questions every plant manager faces when designing or upgrading a water treatment line — and getting it wrong usually means clogged elements, frequent changeouts and a higher cost per cubic metre of water. Here is the practical selection logic our engineers use when specifying filtration for customers in electronics, chemicals, food and pharmaceutical production.

Start With Two Questions: Dirt Load and Target Micron

Before comparing products, quantify two things: how much suspended solid the water carries, and the particle size you must remove. These two numbers decide the answer more than any brand comparison.

The Micron Rating Rule Most Buyers Get Wrong

A filter’s micron rating can be nominal (captures most particles above the stated size) or absolute (captures virtually all of them). A “5 µm nominal” bag will let a meaningful share of 5-micron particles through — that’s normal, and it’s why micron ratings should be staggered instead of jumping straight to the finest grade.

As a rule of thumb, stage filters 3–4× apart: for example 50 µm → 10 µm → 5 µm → RO. Jumping from 100 µm directly to 1 µm loads the final element within days and multiplies your consumable spend.

Why Staged Filtration Wins on Total Cost

The cheapest filter is rarely the one with the lowest unit price — it’s the one that protects everything downstream. In a typical RO pretreatment train, a bag filter removes the bulk of sediment at a few cents per gram of dirt held; the PP melt-blown stage then runs months instead of weeks, and the membranes themselves — by far the most expensive components — are shielded from fouling.

Quick Selection Reference

Not Sure Which Setup Fits Your Water?

Send us your water source, flow rate and target particle size, and our engineers will recommend a filtration train with housing sizes and micron ratings — usually within one working day.
